i have been asking this question to myself for far too long.
And i came up during many researching that this are the most important things in business of course it depends on which business you have .

1. product quality
2. Economy
3.On-time delivery products
4.Advice
5.Closeness to clients
6.Service
7.Delivery flexibility
8. Price
9. Distribution
10. Cooperation with vendors
11. Patents
12. Advertising

the funny thing about this all 

the funny thing about this is that advertising is last . 
And you see very often companies to put in their money into advertising .
But as you can see they could improve their product quality and improve sales that they otherwise could not get.

So work hard and improve your product quality as much as possible and minimize the advertising costs . i don't say you must not put money into advertising but just minimize it . a perfect example of this is McDonald everybody knows them already so they only need to advertise new products so people go to their restaurants and get a new product. But on the background many people started talking bad about McDonald food they thought that the hamburgers had a kind of chemicals and water in it which decreases the value of product quality and decreases sales.
if they just improved their product quality they could sell a lot more  .
they should not even hire those 14 year old kids that makes their food they need a professional hamburger designer! that makes the most beautiful hamburgers ever .
